Tsunami alert issued after 7.6 quake

DHAKA: A tsunami warning was canceled following a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Sunday morning near the Solomon Islands, officials said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii had issued a warning for the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in the South Pacific, but later lifted it.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially estimated at a magnitude 8.3, occurred at a depth of about 29 kilometers (18 miles).

The USGS said it occurred about 60 miles south-southeast of Kirakira, Solomon Islands.
