DHAKA: The Congress and the ruling Samajwadi Party have been washed away in the Modi wave, while Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party is out of race from all the 80 Lok Sabha seats, according to the leads so far.

The BJP was ahead in 69 seats, SP in six followed by Congress on three. The BJP’s pre-poll partner, Apnal Dal, which had contested on two seats, was leading on both.

BSP received the severest drubbing of all. It could retain none of the 20 seats it had won in the 2009 poll.

The BJP beat its own record of 1998, when it had won 57 seats with 36.46% votes. With 69 seats, the vote share has risen to 42%.

Most of the ministers of the Akhilesh Yadav government, who had contested the poll, were trailing, as were UPA ministers Sriprakash Jaiswal, Pradeep Jain Aditya, Beni Prasad Verma, RPN Singh, Jitin Prasad.

India’s foreign affairs minister Salman Khurshid lost security deposit after a massive defeat in Farrukhabad constituency.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi were leading in Gandhi strongholds of Rai Bareli and Amethi. Also leading was the party’s candidate from Saharanpur, Imran Masood.

For the SP, the only saving grace was the five family seats – Mulayam Singh Yadav (Mainpuri, Azamgarh), Dimple Yadav (Kannauj), Dharmendra Yadav (Badaun) and Akchay Yadav (Firozabad).

Another party candidate leading so far was Naseer Khan (Rampur).

Apna Dal, which contested in alliance with the BJP, was leading in Mirzapur, from where Anupriya Patel is in the fray. Its Kunwar Harwansh Singh was leading in Pratapgarh.

In 2009 election the SP had won 23 seats (23.26%) followed by Congress’ 21 seats (18.25%), BSP 20 seats (27.42%), BJP 10 seats (17.50%), Rashtriya Lok Dal five seats (3.27%) and one seat had gone to Kalyan Singh who had contested as an independent from Etah.
