DHAKA: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested in a defamation case on Wednesday, will remain in jail till June 6 as he refused to sign a personal bond on Friday.
In a courtroom that was packed with his supporters, Kejriwal argued his own case.
Among those present were his wife Sunita Kejriwal and party leader Kumar Vishwas. When the judge arrived, he reportedly refused to begin the hearing till the crowd cleared.
“I want to understand what my fault is. I just called a corrupt person corrupt,” he told the judge, who in turn tried to explain to him that signing a bond is procedural requisite.
The AAP chief was arrested after he refused to post bail in a case filed by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari who had been named in AAP’s list of “India’s most corrupt” in January.
He was asked to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 10,000 but he said he would not do so on principle, as he had not committed any crime.
Condemning the arrests, AAP leader Ashutosh said on Thursday, “We respect the court order but the high-handedness of cops was not required. We will start a door-to-door campaign to tell people how an honest person like Kejriwal is behind bars.”
