DHAKA: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Fortaleza in Brazil.
They discussed various issues including the need to resolve the border dispute in an amicable manner, reports the NDTV on Tuesday.
During the discussions, Modi reportedly conveyed India’s desire to maintain peace at the Sino-India border while the two countries continue to work to find a solution to the dispute.
During his election campaign, Modi had taken a strident position on the incursions by Chinese army.
Briefing the media about the meeting, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, “The discussions were centred on all aspects of bilateral relations and regional and international matters. If I were to summarize the meeting, I would say the talks and the meeting went on well.”
He also quoted President Xi as saying that ‘when India and China meet, the world watches us.’
In a significant development, China has invited India to attend a summit of Asia and Pacific (APEC) leaders.
President Xi has acknowledged his visit to India in September and extended an invitation to Modi to visit China, which was accepted. The dates will be decided by diplomatic channels, Akbaruddin said.
Today’s meeting was the fourth high-level engagement between the two countries since the Modi government assumed charge six weeks ago.
