5-yr-old boy mayor loses to teenager

DHAKA: 5-year-old boy's run as mayor is over in a tiny tourist town in northern Minnesota of United Sates of America.

Robert "Bobby" Tufts lost his bid for a third consecutive term as mayor of Dorset on Sunday. Tufts was defeated when the name of sixteen-year-old Eric Mueller of Mendota Heights, Minnesota was drawn from the ballot box during the annual Taste of Dorset festival.

“It was fun, but it’s time to pass on the vote,” Tufts announced Monday. He conceded with a tweet saying,” That’s all, folks!”

Tufts was only 3 when he was first elected mayor in 2012. Dorset, has no formal city government and a population ranging from nine to 28. So the boy was elected in a unique way.

The population of Dorset, about 150 miles northwest of Minneapolis, maxes out at 28, so they have little need for local governance. As a result, their mayoral elections are a tad unorthodox, and the position is ceremonial. In Dorset's mayoral elections, which are held at the annual Taste of Dorset celebration:

1. One can vote as many times as many as he/she wants.

2. Each vote costs a dollar — the money raised helps pay for the event that hosts it.

3. The winner's name is picked at random.

“You put a dollar into the bucket along with your ballot and at the Taste of Dorset. They put all the names into one large hat, and then they pull one out and that’s the new mayor of Dorset,” explained Ian Wallace, a Dorset resident.

Money from the bucket went to town festival expenses, and Tufts received certain perks. According to fellow Dorset resident Sally Wizik Wills, the mayor “receives a key to the city, gift certificates from each business in town and will be featured in our newspaper next spring. It’s a sweet deal!”

Election officials said it was likely that Tufts had more votes, but probability did not help him out in the end. His mom is probably relieved. She told, “He thinks he’s running, but I don’t know if I have it in me.” She added, “Don’t get me wrong, it’s been great. But it might be time to take a little break.”

In honor of Tufts political career — and in hope that his campaign signs this year, "Team Tufts for President, 2048" prove auspicious, here's a look back at the greatest hits of Mayor Bobby Tufts.

Tufts’ mother Emma Tufts is glad that Bobby is resigning as mayor and can be a regular kid again. “He really enjoyed being a kid in some festivals, not having to perform,” she said.

Tufts became a media sensation, appearing on numerous TV shows. He also declared ice cream at the top of the food pyramid as part of his mayoral duties.

The reins of power are now in the hands of 16-year-old Eric Mueller, according to CBS Minnesota. Eric was prompted to run after eating five fried ice creams at one sitting. He'll be a high school junior this fall.

The mayor was vacationing in town with his family.
