DHAKA: Eight persons were reportedly killed and 308 others got injured following clashes between police and protesters in Islamabad, capital of Pakistan, on Saturday night though police confirmed death of one.
The clashes happened there over protesters’ march towards the prime minister’s house, reports local media.
However, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf called for a strike in Karachi on Sunday against Saturday’s violent episode in Islamabad. The announcement was followed by a call for a ‘day of mourning’ by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
According to a report published on the Dawn, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at thousands of protesters led by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek Chief Dr Tahirul Qadri.
Some 25,000 people began to march on the prime minister's house late Saturday after talks with the government mediated by the powerful army failed to end the impasse, it added.
Later, violence broke out after the protesters attempted to remove containers in front of the Premier’s house, using a crane.
After violent clashes, protesters surrounded Parliament.
