Melbourne experienced cyclonic storm, damaging wind suddenly after 3PM toady 30, September catching many citizen off guard and causing significant disruption to traffic movement for falling trees and road crashes.
Melbourne emergency services through smart emergency response within few hours brought everything under control. In many other major cities it could take days to bring normalcy. Such is the efficiency of the most liveable city of the world.
It was warm, bright and sunny when we started from our Melbourne residence to go to Doncaster shopping Centre. Rozy had to fix her Apple Iphone. I felt rain in the wind and knowing well how weather can change without notice in Melbourne I carried my heavy Jacket with me.Rozy and Shuvro were pulling my leg.
But when we reached Shopping Centre and were entering suddenly started a cyclone and heavy rain .The temperature dropped from 24 Degree to 10 degrees.
It came almost from nowhere .Isolated rain and some gusty winds were in the forecast. But all on a sudden a cyclone swept across Melbourne causing major disruption to road communication, delay flights from Melbourne airport , causing some road crashes.
Cyclonic storm lashed the city and Gale struck Port Phillip, Western Port, West Coast, Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast.
DAMAGING WIND squalls 60 to 80 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h caused significant disruption for parts of the North Central, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland districts and also for Alpine parts of the Northeast forecast districts.
The highest wind squalls was experienced for a few hours following the front. Highest wind gusts were 122km/h at Wilsons Promontory, 111km/h at Mt Gellibrand, 109km/h at Frankston and Kilmore Gap, 107km/h at Fawkner Beacon.
The State Emergency Service advised that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
- Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Beware of fallen trees or debris on the road.
The State Emergency Service reported of receiving over a thousand callseeking for assistance from affected citizens. The clearing of roads and lanes by lanes are ongoing and severe weather forecast signal is altered.
30th September is incidentally the last day before onset of Spring. But Melbourne weather is really unpredictable like a lady .It can be warm in the morning, hot by mid-day, rain in afternoon and chilly in the evening. One can experience four seasons on a single day.
