UK Bangladeshis protest Al-Jazeera report

DHAKA: International Crimes Strategy Forum (ICSF) along with a number of UK based Bangladeshi progressive and pro-liberation organizations on Saturday staged demonstration in front of the Al-Jazeera’s London office.

Sources said that they protested the news agency’s ‘biased’ coverage of the trial of the international crimes in Bangladesh, distortion of national history and total lack of sensitivity towards the victims of 1971 genocide.

The protesters, at that time, also showed banner written ‘When you misrepresent death toll, you actually deny a genocide’ to Al-Jazeera.

The ICSF, at their blog, noted that the news agency has persistently distorted national history and presented biased views since the justice process in Bangladesh commenced by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

The protesters at the demonstration urged to Al-Jazeera more accountability, journalistic objectivity, neutrality and conscientiousness in covering issues that are sensitive to the victims, such as the trial of the perpetrators and the factual details pertaining to the history of 1971.

Earlier, Al-Jazeera claimed on November 3 that around 300,000 to 500,000 people were killed in the war against Pakistan in 1971.

The Qatar-based news channel broadcasted the report during the Appellate Division’s verdict that upheld death for war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.

However, the organizations, that took part in the protest, are Ekatturer Ghadak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Projonmo 71, Rising Path for War Heroine, Saudha, Campaign for Protection of Religious Minorities in Bangladesh (CPRM), Bangladesh Community Church, Nari Chetona, British Bangladesh Women’s Organisation, Dockland Theatre and Performing Arts, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Jubo Union, Awami Ainjibi Parishad, London City Jubo League, UK Mohila Awami League, JSD, ICT Support Forum and UK Awami League.
