DHAKA: Secretary of State John F. Kerry suffered a leg injury Sunday morning in an accident while bicycling and was transported by medical helicopter to a Geneva hospital, reports the Washington Post.
Spokesman John Kirby said that Kerry, 71, did not lose consciousness, and that he was attended by a physician at the scene, in the small town of Scionzier, France, just over the Swiss border about 30 miles from Geneva. He was accompanied by his motorcade and a security detail at the time of the accident.
The extent of his injury was not specified. Kirby said in a statement that Kerry was “stable” and was being evaluated at the Hospital University of Geneva.
Kerry was in Geneva for all-day talks Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. He is scheduled to fly later Sunday to Madrid, and then on Monday to Paris for a meeting with U.S. allies in the fight against the Islamic State before returning to Washington on Wednesday.
Kerry, 71, keeps a full travel schedule that usually provides little downtime while on the road. When he has the opportunity while on official business overseas, he walks or cycles, often in the early morning hours.
