DHAKA: Among the 1.92 lakh graduates who were conferred degrees on Saturday at the 28th convocation of India’s Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou), also included Mumbai blast accused Yakub Memon, who was hanged on July 30.
Memon was conferred the degree in absentia by the Nagpur Regional Centre of the university. With it, Memon completed two masters’ program from Ignou - Political Science in December 2014 and English in 2013.
According to sources, none of his family members came to collect the degree, which will be sent via post to the family.
Qualified Chartered Accountant, Memon completed his masters’ in English literature in 2013. However he was not allowed to in person attendance at the convocation and his degree was handed over in jail.
Memon thereafter enrolled for Masters in political science, which he completed in December 2014, but the degree was not conferred upon him as all the degrees are given during the convocation, which he didn’t live to collect.
‘Only the PhDs and MPhils, awards and gold medals are conferred at the headquarters in Delhi. Rest of the degrees are conferred at the regional centers,’ said NP Singh, registrar, student evaluation, Ignou, The Times of India publishes this report on Sunday.
