New Delhi: A Red alert has been issued in Delhi after two Taiwan tourists were fired at by two unidentified men on a motorcycle outside Gate Number 3 of Jama Masjid.
The two injured, Zeseweiu Ku, Chiang Kh, were getting on a tourist bus while the incident took place. They both have been admitted to the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash(LNJP) Hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
The police say, there is no clarity on the shooters` motive, but all angles are being investigated.
"The two assailants fired indiscriminately using .38 calibre rounds. They were wearing raincoats and helmets. Our constables ran after them. A Red Alert has been issued in Delhi," said Joint Commissioner of Police, Karnail Singh. (Watch: Red alert issued in Delhi, says Karnail Singh)
According to eyewitnesses, the men on the bike attacked a tourist bus.
"There were two people on the bike as they shot at a tourist bus. I think two people were injured," said an eyewitness.
"The miscreants dropped their guns while escaping. The police have those guns with them," said another eyewitness.
Throwing more light on the sequence of events, the bus driver who drove these tourists to Jama Masjid said, " We started from our hotel around 09:00 this morning and reached Jama masjid between 09.30 and 09.45 am, and this happened then. There were six people from Taiwan on the bus and two of them were injured in the firing."
Speaking to NDTV, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, "I want to appeal to everybody not to panic. The Police commissioner is in touch with me, the moment they are nabbed he will let me know." (Watch: No need to panic, says Sheila Dikshit)
Sources have told NDTV, since the attack comes just two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, the CWG security centre is flooded with concerned calls from participating countries.
Meanwhile, Home Minister P Chidambaram too reached the LNJP Hospital to meet the injured Taiwanese tourists.
Also, following the incident a fear psychosis has developed. As per reports Mumbai city is also placed under high alert.
In the aftermath of the shootout, a high-level meeting on the security related matters for the Games is slated to be held on Tuesday.
