BEIJING: Thirteen people died and 33 others went missing as tropical storm Fanapi swept across southern China this week, triggering severe flooding and mudslides, state media reported Wednesday.

Fanapi made landfall on the mainland Monday, one day after slamming Taiwan with heavy rains, killing two people and leaving more than 100 injured on the island.

All of the deaths occurred in southern China`s Guangdong province. Five of the victims died after a tailings dam burst, while two others were killed when their house collapsed.

Twenty-five of the 33 missing disappeared in a rain-triggered mudslide, the report said.

Fanapi -- the 11th typhoon to hit southern China this year -- is moving to the west at a speed of up to 10 kilometres (six miles) an hour, dumping torrential rains in its wake, meteorologists said.
