DHAKA: A fire at a dormitory for schoolgirls in southern Turkey on Tuesday left twelve people dead, eleven of them teenagers on Tuesday (November 29).

An electrical fault may have triggered the blaze at Aladag in the province of Adana but a full investigation is underway, sources said.

A senior government official said a woman who worked at the dormitory was also among the dead and that at least 22 other girls were injured, reports the Euronews on Wednesday.

An opposition politician told Turkish media that the dormitory housed impoverished girls whose families come from nearby villages where there are no schools.

Television footage showed a blaze rising from the rooftop of a multi-storey building and teams of firefighters working to put it out.
