Ban calls for finding political solution

DHAKA: UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon calls on the international community to return peace and accord to Syria, as the Syrian people deserve this.

Speaking to students of St Petersburg State University on Wednesday, Ban said he expected to discuss the issue of Syria at the G20 summit on September 5-6, reports The Voice of Russia.

The UN secretary-general insisted that the Syria problem be solved politically rather than through armed confrontation, which, in his words, is the only way to help return peace to the country and spare people’s lives.

Ban also called for stepping up the convention of an international conference on Syria and holding it in October.

International conference on Syria could take place in October, said UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon speaking to students at St Petersburg State University.

‘I hope very much that this meeting will take place as soon as possible. Maybe in October since September will be a very busy month for the General Assembly,’ he said.

He added that the Syrian conflict could only be solved through a political not military solution.
