DHAKA: A Bangladesh diplomat has been arrested in New York for allegedly forcing a Bangladeshi servant to work in his family for 18 hours a day without wages.
According to international news media, the diplomat, identified as Mohammad Shahidul Islam, 50, is serving as a Deputy Consul General of Bangladesh.
New York’s Queens district Attorney General’s office said the accused forced and physically abused the servant for four years (2012-2016) and refused to pay him wages.
On the basis of these allegations, a court there has framed charges against the diplomat and he might get a 15-year jail sentence if proven guilty. The court also fixed June 28 for holding hearing in the case.
However, Bangladesh Consulate General in New York was not available for comment in this regard.
