25 infants die at a Kolkata hospital in 3 days

DHAKA: At least 25 infants are reported to have died at a government-run children`s hospital in Kolkata in the last three days.

BC Roy Post-Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences is considered to be one of the best specialty children`s hospitals in the state. Rejecting allegations of medical negligence, doctors here say most of the infants who have died in the last 72 hours were admitted here in extremely critical condition from far flung districts.

In October 2011, 18 infant deaths in 48 hours at the same hospital had provoked angry demonstrations by parents and had led to a visit from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who doubles up as the Health Minister.

An inquiry conducted on the orders of the government had then absolved the hospital of medical negligence, and had asked for new facilities to be added immediately.
