1,200 detained in Moscow anti-migrant raid

DHAKA: Moscow police have detained 1,200 people in an anti-migrant raid on a produce market where a racially tinged riot took place over the weekend after the killing of an ethnic Russian.

‘About 1,200 people have been taken to the police in the course of a raid on a produce market in Biryulyovo to check their criminal connections,’ a representative of the Moscow police told media, reports The Straits Times.

An initially peaceful protest in the Biryulyovo district of Moscow to protest the killing of Yegor Shcherbakov, 25, rapidly descended into bloody clashes with the police that left the glass doors of a shopping centre smashed and cars upturned.

The crowd chanted ‘Russia for Russians!’ and other nationalist slogans during a protest that swelled to more than 1,000 people in the industrial district of southern Moscow.
