DHAKA: Police arrested 12 people and charged six of them for allegedly gang-raping a 21-year-old woman on Christmas Eve in southern India, in another case of sexual assault of women in the country.
Law enforcing agencies said that the arrests were made Thursday after the woman complained that she was abducted and raped while visiting a friend in Karaikal, a port city in Pondicherry state.
Later, the woman was hospitalized with fatal injuries, reports NDTV.
Police have also detained a juvenile male in connection with the incident.
The assault came days after India marked the first anniversary of the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.
