Pay Tk 20 lakh to Jihad family, asks HC in full verdict

DHAKA: The High Court has released the full text of verdict asking authorities concerned to pay Tk. 20 lakh as compensation to the family of a four-year-old Jihad for his tragic death.

Barrister Abdul Halim, counsel of the case, on Monday (October 09) confirmed the matter to the Banglanews.

He said that the HC’s full verdict in the case filed for child Jihad, who died after falling into a deep pipe in 2014 in capital’s Shahjahanpur, has been released.

Earlier on February 18, the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo pronounced the short verdict following a writ petition.

Children’s Charity Bangladesh Foundation filed the writ petition on December 28 in 2014, seeking the court directives to give Tk 30 lakh to Jihad’s family as compensation.

In its order, the HC bench had said that it would fix the amount of the compensation when it will release the full verdict and specify it to the authorities concerned.

According to court verdict, the Railway authorities have to pay Tk. 10 lakh, while the Civil Defense authorities will pay the rest Tk. 10 lakh.

The HC bench ordered them to hand over the amount to the father and mother of child Jihad within 90 days.

Child Jihad died after he slipped into the deep pipe of an abandoned railway pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony in the city on December 26 in 2014.

Twenty-three hours into his fall, the body was recovered by a volunteer group from the deep well shaft using indigenous tool on December 27 despite the Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities repeated claim during rescue operation that there was no one inside trapped.
