SC legal aid body’s letter seeking undertrial prisoners’ details

DHAKA: The Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee has written a letter to the inspector general of prisons requesting him to provide an updated list of undertrial prisoners who are suffering in jails more than seven years.

Advocate Ripan Pal Sku, coordinator of the SC legal aid body, on Sunday (November 19) told Banglanews that the letter was sent seeking the details of undertrial prisoners in 69 jails across the country.

Titas Hillol, assistant attorney general and member secretary of the body, signed the letter. The legal aid committee will provide the legal support for the prisoners.

The SC committee has not given any time limit to the IG prisons for submitting the report

Earlier on November 15 in 2016, the SC body had sent such a letter asking the IG prisons to provide the details of undertrial prisoners who have been suffering in jail more than five years and ten years across the country.

The IG prisons had later provided a list where 460 under trial prisoners were serving in jail for more than five years and ten years across the country.

Then the HC granted bail to around 20 undertrial prisoners at different times on suo moto rules.
