DHAKA: The High Court asked law secretary, information secretary and the authorities concerned to be vigilant so that identities of children are not revealed by media in criminal cases.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil on Tuesday (February 12) delivered the judgment on a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer, Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon following a report published by an English daily ‘The Daily Star’.
Media can not reveal name, address, photo and information of children in criminal cases, said Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon.
Apart from asking all mass media to conform to the law, the HC also warned The Daily Star not to repeat such an occurrence.
Lawyer Sagufta Tabassum Ahmed accompanied Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon.
Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman moved for the state while Advocate Kazi Ershadul Alam argued for ‘The Daily Star.’
The Daily Star published a report titled 'Boy gets 10 yrs for killing classmate' on November 5, 2018.
The report revealed information about the accused child, which was violation of Children Act 2013.
Later, Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon filed the writ petition.
On November 19 last year, the HC issued a rule asking the English daily to respond to the rule within 15 days.
