DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that ordered Green Line Paribahan Ltd to compensate road crash victim Russel Sarker with Tk 50 lakh.
On Sunday (March 31), the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued the order after rejecting an appeal of Green Line challenging the HC order.
Lawyer Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza and Advocate-on-Record Khabir Uddin Bhuiyan moved for the writ petition while lawyers Abdul Baset Majumder and Aji Ullah moved for Green Line, at the courtroom.
On Mar 12, the HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader directed the authorities of Green Line to compensate Russel Sarker with Tk 50 lakh.
The bus authorities were ordered to pay the money within two weeks.
Besides, they were ordered to carry the costs if Russel requires a surgery on leg and implantation of an artificial leg.
Russel Sarker, then a rent-a-car driver, lost one of his legs under the wheel of a Green Line Paribahan bus on the slope of Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar area of Jatrabari on Apr 28, 2018.
The court earlier issued a rule why Russel won’t be compensated with one crore taka, on May 14, 2018, following a writ petition from former lawmaker Umme Kulsum Smrity.
