DHAKA: The High Court on Sunday (March 31) issued a rule upon the government over a provision in Police Recruitment Regulation that imposes a condition of being unmarried for applying to the post of sub-inspector.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Mohammad Hossain Khan, a resident of Khilgaon area.

In the petition filed before the HC on February 25, he challenged the legality of the provision of the Police Regulation in SI recruitment.

Assistant Attorney General Purobi Shaha stood for the state while Advocate Ishrat Hasan moved for the petitioner.  

Advocate Ishrat Hasan said according to provision of Police Regulation, a condition has remained imposed that candidate have to be unmarried and having high social status for applying to the post of sub-inspector (SI). 

In the rule, the court asked the authorities concerned of the government to explain in four weeks why this provision of being unmarried and having high social status for applying to the post of sub-inspector (SI) should not be declared discriminatory, illegal and unconstitutional.

Ishrat Hasan said though her client has academic qualification he failed to apply for the post due to the conditions.

Law Secretary, Legislative and Parliamentary affairs Senior Secretary, two secretaries of Home Ministry (Public Security and Safety Service Division) and Inspector General of Police were made respondent of the rule.
