Home remedies for seasonal skin and hair woes

We list down a few common beauty problems and their simple home remedies.

SKIN ISSUES
During summer, the strong UV rays of the sun can burn the outer layer of the skin and cause darkening of the skin and pigmentation.

Solution Whenever you step out of the house, apart from applying a sunscreen with an SPF 30++ on your face and other exposed body parts, go for additional sun protection like carrying an umbrella. To get relief from sunburns, apply a soothing mixture of turmeric, mint and yogurt on the affected area. You can also apply creams with antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, as these help in healing sunburns. .

TANNING
Those with a lighter complexion are more susceptible to getting tanned than those with a darker one. There are two types of skin tanning. The first is immediate skin tanning, in which the colour of the skin changes as soon as you step out in the sun.

This tan remains upto a maximum of 36 hours. The second is delayed skin tanning, where you see a change in the colour of your skin after 48-72 hours of being in the sun. This tan may stay upto days or weeks.

Solution While using a sunscreen will protect your skin, once you're home, you can apply a homemade face pack made from yogurt, lemon and tomato. This will help remove the tan and bleach the skin. Also ensure that you consume Vitamin C supplements daily .

PRICKLY HEAT
It is caused due to excessive perspiration, which results in rashes and boils.

Solution It's important to wear loose and light clothes in fabrics like cotton during this season. If you are prone to sweating more, make sure you change your clothes more often. Use a calamine, ice or mintbased moisturising product on the body .

EXCESSIVE PERSPIRATION
This is the body's way of regulating the heat to cool you down, but for some people, it can be it can result in foul odour.

Solution During summers, take a bath more than once and use a talcum powder and deodorant as required to keep odour at bay. Keep yourself thoroughly hydrated by drinking at least eight litres of water a day. .

HAIR ISSUES
A city like Mumbai has a high level of humidity during sum mer, which causes moisture in the hair. This is responsible for the increase of oil in the scalp.

Solution Instead of washing your hair once or twice a week, make sure you take a head bath at least four times a week during this season. This will keep your hair clean and nongreasy. .

DANDRUFF
When your hair is exposed to humid weather, along with dust, pollution and the UV rays of the sun, it can lead to formation of dandruff.

Solution Massage your hair and scalp with a mixture coconut oil and lemon to prevent the formation of dandruff.Switch to a strong anti-dandruff shampoo, as this will prevent fungal infections. You can opt for a lighter conditioner for your hair.

HAIR FALL
Sweating can cause the pores on the surface of the scalp to open up, making the hair folli cles weak. This leads to hair loss.

Solution When you step out in the sun, cover your head with a scarf or hat. For stronger hair, include more pro teins in your diet and up the intake of red and green vegetables. .

DISCOLOURATION
If you regularly swim, the chlorine in the pool water can cause discolouration of the hair, as well as lend a greyish or greenish cast and make them brittle.

Solution Wet your hair before you step into the pool or wear a shower cap. Deep condition them with a light-weight non creamy conditioner.
