Torture in police custody: Narayanganj ex OC, SI sent to jail

A Narayanganj court today (Mar 12) landed two former police officials in jail in a case filed over alleged torture in police custody.

Earlier in the day, the accused Morshed Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon Police Station, and Sadhan Basak, sub-inspector surrendered before the court and submitted bail petitions in the case.

Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain of District and Sessions Court, however, rejected their bail petitions and ordered authorities to send them to jail this afternoon.

He said on February 9, 2019, the court issued arrest warrants against Morshed Alam and Sadhan Basak after a case was filed against them under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act.

According to the case document, on October 7, 2018, a businessman in Sonargaon, Anisur Rahman Alamgir, local Jubo League leader Jahidul Islam Swapan and Babul were tortured at the police station at midnight. Morshed Alam was then officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station and sub-inspector Sadhan Basak was the second officer.
