CHITTAGONG: Police detained a person with 26 gold bars worth around Tk1 crore from Oxygen intersection in the port city on Monday midnight.

The detainee, Jakir Alam, 26, of Hathazari upazila of the district, was going to Kotwat from Hathazari on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at 11:30pm.

During regular checking in Bayejid thana check post, police searched Jakir found 26 gold bars weighing around 260 tolas in a bag he was carrying and his pockets, said Bayejid thana officer-in-charge Sairul Islam.

Police, however, nabbed Jakir from the spot.

During primary interrogation, Jakir said an expatriate living in Middle East asked him to hand over the gold bars to a person in Kotwali.

A case was filed against the detainee in this connection.
