Tripartite clash kills 1 in C’Bazar

COX’S BAZAR: A man was killed and 30 others including eight cops were injured in a tripartite clash between BNP, Awami League activists and law enforcers in Chakaria Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Zaker Hossain, 42, son of late Akbar Hossain from Chakaria municipality.

Chakaria municipality mayor Nurul Islam, also joint secretary general of municipality BNP claimed that Zaker was a BNP activist.

Witnesses said that the clash broke out as BNP activists threw brick-bats at police, after the namaaz-e-janaza of organizing secretary of upazila Jubo Dal Abdul Halim.

During the clash, more than 50 vehicles and shops were vandalized.

Police fired five rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, but BNP activists went berserk and vandalized more than 30 vehicles and shops, sources added.

At that time, Awami League activists also joined with police, sources added.

Additional police were deployed, who fired more than 30 rounds of rubber bullets, leaving 31 persons injured.

On the way to the hospital, critically injured Zaker succumbed to his injuries.

Officer-in-Charge of Chakaria Thana Ranjit Kumar Barus told banglanews that the situation was under control then.
