DHAKA: The European Union would not send observers to monitor the upcoming 10th national polls if the political deadlock and nationwide violent activities continue.

William Hanna, the European Union High Commissioner in Dhaka, made the assertion while talking with journalists after a meeting with Chief election commissioner (CEC) at city’s election commission secretariat on Sunday morning.

He said, “The European Union will take decision on sending delegation to observe upcoming national polls considering the current political situation. The decision on sending observers to Bangladesh was not taken yet.”

Hanna said EU wants to provide all kinds of assistance for holding a free and fair election in Bangladesh. But Bangladesh authorities have to ensure the fair environment for polls.

Earlier on November 30, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued a statement from Brussels on the preparation for general election in Bangladesh.

The statement said, “Ending violence and finding a political solution through dialogue are essential to allow peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible polls to take place. This can only happen if all sides can agree to move ahead, in the interests of the country’s future.”

The EU also called on the leaders of all political parties in Bangladesh to agree on a mutually acceptable formula to facilitate in holding of elections which can reflect peoples wish and urged political leaders to abstain from any actions that could spark further violence.
