Habibur Rahman Mizan, former councilor of Ward No. 32 of Dhaka North City Corporation, alleged that he had been arrested while demanding justice for the murder of his younger brother.
He came up with the remark in a press conference organised jointly by former councilor of ward number 33 Tarekuzzaman Rajib, at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity in Shegunbagicha of the capital on Sunday (May 28).
Habibur Rahman said, "On May 7, 1996, my younger brother Mostafizur Rahman was shot dead. In the murder case, the court sentenced top terror Tofail Ahmed Joseph to death and Joseph's brothers Haris Ahmed and Anis Ahmed to life imprisonment."
"Seeking justice for my brother's murder took a wrong turn and I was arrested in 2019 by the direction of an influential person. Before my arrest, there was not even a case against me. Even though I was released, I still have security concerns. I never thought I could stand in front of you again."
"I have deposited my licensed pistol to a shop in Kakrail in 2018. Why do I still need broken weapons? Mizan questioned to reporters present at the press conference.
However, "RAB showed me arrested by showing a broken weapon recovered from me. I was arrested during the anti-casino drive. But I have nothing to do with the casino scandal," Mizan also said.
The former councilor also the general secretary of Mohammodpur police station Alwami Leauge claimed that, "I was arrested at the direct instigation of an influential person. Documents, money and gold ornaments were illegally seized from my house at the time of arrest but they were not mentioned in the seizure list. I still haven't got those back."
"I am not freedom Mizan. he is a convict. Who is now in jail," extended the former councilor.
Habibur Rahman Mizan said, "After my brother's murder Joshep was sentenced to death, later, the Appellate Division reduced the rigorous punishment to life imprisonment. Joseph's brothers Haris Ahmad and Anis Ahmad were also accused in that case. However, they were later relieved by the 'Forgiveness' of President. Even after being convicted, they did not have to go to jail. They are still accused on terrorism activities.
Tofail Ahmed Joseph, a terrorist sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of my brother, was also released from prison in May 2018 after seeking pardon from the President.
In the 90's, Joseph was the leader of elder brother's cadre force. At that time, Joseph established a reign of terror in Mohammadpur-Hazaribagh and surrounding areas, said Mizan, adding Joseph's terrorism activities are still on.
When asked by the reporters who is the influential person? Mizan did not mention the name and said, "I was arrested at the direct instigation of an influential person and with the help of top terrorists Joseph, Haris and Anis."
After president's forgiveness, Joseph promised that he will mend and would never do anything evil again. In reality, he is still the same and did not change, said Mizan.
"In 2020, my wife Moni Rahman passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital. I could not even see her face. My mother, elder sister's son-in-law and many relatives died, I could not participate in their religious farewell, Mizan also said to media.
This former councilor said adding that, "Alleged money laundering and illegal weapons cases are still haunting me. Which I am not affiliated with in any way."
The former councilor demanded to stop all the harassments and remove him from all false cases.
"After more than three years of imprisonment, I was released on November 8, 2022. I expect justice from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Top terrorist Joseph and his influential forces framed me in a false case. My orderly life has fallen apart. I demand immediate arrest of this terrorist group, added Habibur Rahman Mizan.
