At least 14 people were killed after a truck rammed into a pickup van on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in the Nazir Bazar area of Dakshin Surma upazila, Sylhet, on Wednesday (June 7). 

Besides, 17 others were injured in the accident that occurred around 5:30am.

Additional Police Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Masud Rana confirmed the matter. 

The deceased were identified as Haris Mia, 55, Sourav, 27, Awlad Hossain, 40, Md Sayob Ali, 27, Badsha Mia, 25, Sadhu Mia, 40, Rashid Mia, 50, Shahin Mia, 40, Dulal Mia, 26, Sayed Nur, 60, Awlad Hossain Talukdar, 50, Aklim Mia, 50, Sijil Mia, 55 and Amena Begum, 43.

Shafiqul Islam, Duty officer of Dakshin Surma police station said the sand-laden truck hit the pickup carrying about 30/32 construction workers in the Kutubpur area, leaving 11 people dead on the spot and 19 others injured. 

Later three others also died in the hospital, he added.
