At least five people were killed after a bus collided with a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Jaintapur Upazila on Sylhet-Tamabil road on Friday night.
The deceased were Nur Uddin, 55, son of Mozzamel Ali of Jaintapur Upazila; Abdul Latif, 50, son Abdul Bari of Bargati village; Md Kamal, 25, son of Tariqul Islam Fasfara village; Musud Ali, 50, son of Late Khurshed Alam of Borokholas village; Abdul Motin alias Kachai, 45, son of Late Abdus Sukkur of Dighipara village of the upazila. All the deceased were auto-rickshaw passengers.
The accident took place around 10 pm in Darvaste area of the upazila.
Jaintapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Faruk confirmed the matter.
Quoting locals, he said a Jaflong-bound bus from Sylhet collided head-on with the three wheeler (locally called Tomtom) in front of the Darvaste Palli Bidyut Office, leaving five people dead and several others injured on the spot.
The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital for treatment.
He said Jaintapur and Bateshwar fire service personnel with the help of locals rescued the bus that fell into a ditch.
