Rana plaza: SC stays Rana's bail for six more months

The Appellate Division on Monday (July 10) stayed for six months a High Court verdict that granted bail to Sohel Rana, owner of the ill-fated Rana Plaza, in the murder case.

The three-member bench of the Appellate division led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order.

Rana Plaza collapsed in 2013 leaving 1,138 RMG workers dead after the deadly incident.

On April 6, the High Court granted bail to Sohel Rana. Later, the state counsel filed a petition challenging the legality of the HC order.

Earlier on March 1 last year, the High Court issued a rule asking why the building owner Sohel Rana would not be granted bail in a murder case filed over the collapse of Rana Plaza and death of workers.

As many as 1,136 redaymade garment workers died and many others injured when the 10-storeyed Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24, 2013 near Savar bus stand.

Five days after the incident, on April 29, Sohail Rana was arrested from Benapole in Jashore while fleeing to India.
