A Brahmanbaria court on Thursday (July 20) sentenced a man to death for killing a nine-year-old girl after rape.

The death-row convict Kanai Mia, son of late Libu Mia, a resident of west Kuttapara of Sarail Upazila, was also fined Tk 1 lakh.

Judge Mohammad Rezaul Karim of Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2 handed down the verdict this afternoon.

According to the case statement, on December 16, 2019, the victim Zainab Akter went missing. The next day, on December 17, police recovered Zainab's body from a bamboo grove near the house.

Later, the victim's mother Ferdousi Begum filed a murder case against Kanai as plaintiff. Based on the case, police arrested Kanai and he admitted to committing the crime.

The lawyer of the case Syed Merazul Islam confirmed the matter.

"Following Kanai's testimony, the court ordered the death sentence. The plaintiffs are satisfied with the verdict," he added.
