At least 17 people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus fell into a roadside pond at Chhatrakanda in Sadar upazila of Jhalakathi on Saturday (July 22).

The bus met with the accident around 10 am.

Of the deceased, eight were women, and two children. However, the identities of the victims could not be known immediately.

According to locals, the bus, carrying 50-60 passengers, overturned and fell into the pond while going to Barishal from Vandardia.

Firoz Kutubi, Deputy Assistant Director of Jhalkathi Fire Service, told Banglanews that the rescue operation is being carried out by two units of the fire service along with the police administration and local authorities.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin Sarkar also confirmed the matter.
