Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has paid the National Revenue Board (NBR) Tk 12.46 crore in tax on donation of Tk 76.73 crore to Muhammad Yunus Trust.
On behalf of him, Md Ruhul Amin Sarker on Tuesday paid the amount.
Ruhul Amin also sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, Tax Zone-14 of the NBR. In his letter, he mentioned that the Tax Zone concerned was sent a letter regarding the payment of gift tax.
Dr Yunus paid Tk 12,46,72,608 in gift tax through a pay order to Southeast Bank on Tuesday (July 25).
In this regard, Md Ruhul Amin Sarker said the tax was paid as per the High Court order. At the same time, the Tax Zone concerned was sent a letter requesting for acknowledgement of the money.
On July 23, the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, issued the order to pay the 'tax on donation' to the NBR after dismissing Dr Yunus's leave to appeal. The court also rejected the time petition of Dr Yunus.
Earlier on June 21, Dr Yunus filed three appeals with the Appellate Division challenging the income tax authority's decision to impose the 'tax on donation’ on money donated to three trusts in his name for three tax years.
