A female joint commissioner of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) was able to narrowly escape kidnappers after 18 hours in the capital.
NBR official (Tax zone-2 in Dhaka) Masuma Khatun, who was physically assaulted by the kidnappers, is now undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Dhaka.
However, three members of the gang were arrested after the case was filed on August 19, said Ramna Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hassan.
The arrestees Saiful Islam, Abu Bakar Siddique alias Sabbir and Yashin Arafat Raju, confessed to committing the crime.
The three accused were sent to jail after a one-day remand, the OC added.
The victim was kidnapped from the Ramna area of the capital on Friday (August 18), the OC said, adding about 18 hours after the abduction, she escaped from kidnappers with the help of locals.
According to her husband Elias Khan, on the night of August 18, he lodged a general diary (GD) at the Ramna Police Station getting no whereabouts of his wife. On August 19, the kidnappers left two or three members of their gang near the car while others went to buy some food for lunch. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Masuma Khatoon came out of the car and began shouting for help. Then, people from the vicinity rushed forward and rescued her.
According to the case statement, Masuma Khatun's left leg was broken due to torture. Her eyes were also severely injured. Apart from this, blood has clotted in various parts of the body, including the head.
