Dhaka Customs House has temporarily suspended four of its officials over embezzlement of 55 kilograms of gold from Dhaka airport vault.
The suspended officials are Assistant Revenue Officers (AROs) Md Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam Shahed, Masud Rana and Akram Sheikh.
AKM Nurul Huda Azad, Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, issued the suspension order on Tuesday (September 12).
The suspension has come at a time when investigators found primary involvement of the aforesaid officials in the gold burglary.
The officials allegedly looted the huge amount of gold from high-security vault at Customs Transit Godown-1 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). Later, they bought 150 bhories of gold from Baitul Mukarram Market at Tk 1.50 crore and kept it in the vault again to save skin.
When stealing of 55kg gold was detected, senior officials of customs department did not take responsibility. Rather, they informed law enforcers of the incident.
Case filed with the Airport Police Station has been transferred to Detective Branch for a better investigation. The investigators raided the houses of the accused and suspects but failed to recover the missing gold yet.
