One killed, 10 injured in Cumilla AL factional clash

A local Swechasebak League leader was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two factions of the ruling Awami League in Cumilla on Monday (September 18).

The incident took place in village Chalibhanga under Meghna upazila this morning.

The deceased Nizam Sarkar, 40, is a leader of Chalibhanga union unit of Swechchhasebak League.

The injured were identified as Titu, 30, Ramzan, 35, Ibrahim, 28, Shakil, 22, Khaled Hasan, 19, Delwar, 32, Anich Sarkar, 25, Suman, 24, Hanif, 45, and Wasim, 35.

According to locals there was a longstanding rivalry between local Awami League leader Humayun chairman and another AL faction led by Md Qayum over establishing supremacy in the area.

As a sequel to the previous enmity, supporters of the two groups, armed with local weapons, attacked each other in the morning, leaving at least 11 people injured, locals added.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Meghna Police Station, Delwar Hossain confirmed the matter. 

He said the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Nizam Sarkar, brother of Humayun chairman, died.

Preparation is underway to file a case in this regard, he added.
