Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury held a meeting with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

The duo discussed current development projects, ways to boost bilateral economic relations, tourism prospects and women empowerment.

The meeting was held as Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena called on Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin at Jatiya Sangsad premises on Monday.

Dr Shirin hailed the current government of Sri Lanka for effective steps to bring back economic normalcy from a great disaster.

She also highlighted Bangladesh’s success in ensuring 100 percent electrification, hike in literacy, women empowerment, and social safety net under Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Referring to Vision 2041, she said the government has fixed a goal to turn Bangladesh into a developed country by that time.

To push the economy to a new high, the government has moved to construct 100 special economic zones across the country, she said, calling for Sri Lankan support.

Tharaka Balasuriya, acting foreign minister of Sri Lanka, Tareq Md Ariful Islam, Bangladesh high commissioner to Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat deputy secretary Mohammad Rashed Iqbal, among others, were present.
