A policeman succumbed to his injuries received during a clash between law enforcers and supporters centering rallies of Awami League, BNP and Jamaat at Fakirapool intersection in the capital this (October 28) afternoon.
However, the name and rank of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Dr Md Alauddin, resident physician at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) confirmed the matter.
He said that the policeman was brought to the hospital in dead condition.
"He (the victim) had severe head injuries. We declared him dead after conducting the ECG," Md Alauddin added.
Meanwhile, BNP declared a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Sunday (October 29) to protest police action at the party's Nayapaltan rally today.
Earlier today, the grand rally of BNP started in front of its Nayapaltan central office with the participation of thousands of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies to press home their one-point demand for holding the upcoming national election under a non-party government.
However, supporters gathered since morning today to make the rally a success.
Later, the areas surrounding the capital's Nightingale intersection turned into a battlefield as BNP men were waging a pitched battle with police and Awami League.
Later, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were deployed in that area.
