Over 200 injured as earthquake causes panic in Cumilla

More than two hundred garment workers in Cumilla's Chauddagram sustained injuries while rushing out of the factory building in panic during the earthquake this morning.

Chauddagram Upazila Health Officer Golam Kibria confirmed the matter.

He said that multiple teams are actively providing medical treatment to the injured. He however could not mention the exact number of injured. But it might be more than two hundred, he added.

Chauddagram police station officer-in-charge (OC) Trinath Saha said many people were injured while trying to evacuate the factory building during today's earthquake. 

Efforts are underway to gather more details, he added.

A magnitude of 5.6 earthquake jolted Dhaka and other parts of the country this morning.

The epicentre of the quake was in Ramganj, Cumilla region, some 86km south-east of BMD Seismic Centre at Agargaon in Dhaka, according to the Met office.

Categorised as “moderate,” the tremor hit at 9:35am, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre was 10km east-northeast of Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur district and the quake had a depth of 38.5km.

Apart from Dhaka and Cumilla, the tremor was also felt in Chattogram, Chandpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur, Chuadanga, Noakhali, Kushtia and elsewhere in the country.
