A Rajshahi court on Tuesday (December 19) sentenced 13 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists to life term imprisonment for killing Natore's Jubo League leader Khairul Islam in 2013.
Khairul was the joint secretary of Jubo League unit at Lalpur upazila.
The Rajshahi speedy trial tribunal's judge Md Mohiduzzaman fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, and in default they have to stay three more months in jail.
Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu confirmed the matter to media.
The court also acquitted 53 accused as the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against them.
According to the case statement, on February 28, 2013, soon after the announcement of Jamaat's central nayeb-e-amir Delwar Hossain Sayedee's death sentence, the party leaders and activists attacked houses of local Awami League leaders in the upazila.
Around 2:00pm, they attacked the house of local AL leader Abdul Jalil and hacked his wife Mazeda Begum. Later they set the house on fire. Khairul rushed to the spot to save them. On his way, another group of Jamaat men hacked him to death.
