A Shariatpur court today (January 16) sentenced five people to death for raping and killing a woman in the district. 

The death row convicts are - Nizam Bali, 45, Mohammad Ali, 35, Omar Farooq Bepari, 24, Al Amin Bepari, 20, and Ibrahim Mollah, 21.

Md. Sohel Ahmed, Judge Shariatpur Women and Children Torture Suppression Tribunal passed the order this afternoon.

According to the court source, the convicts were each fined to Tk 1 lakh.

Two convicts were present in the court during the verdict while the rest are on the run.

According to the case statement, a 55-year-old woman of Damudya upazila on April 18, 2019 disappeared from her house at around 5 pm. 

Later, On April 21, police recovered the body of the victim near Abdur Rahman Master Bari area, 10 kilometers away from the victim’s home with a broken arm in an abandoned pond.

The next day, the woman's younger brother filed a murder case in the Shariatpur court accusing 13 people as the plaintiff. After the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against five people.

However, The court passed the verdict after hearing 22 witnesses in the case on Tuesday afternoon.

The son of the deceased woman is a doctor. He said, “We are happy with the verdict. I demand to the government that this judgment should be implemented quickly.”

Shariatpur Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal Advocate Sanal Mia confirmed the matter. 

"This is a historic verdict. A woman was gang-raped and murdered. The state party is satisfied with this verdict," said the advocate.
