Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said a feasibility study is underway for the extension of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6, popularly known as metro rail, from Dhaka’s Uttara to Tongi in Gazipur.
“Besides, the construction of the metro rail’s extended section from Motijheel to Kamalapur will be completed by June next year,” he told reporters after inaugurating the Bangabandhu Corner at the MRT Line-6 depot in Uttara’s Diabari.
The minister hoped that six mass rapid transit lines would be operational in the city by 2030.
“A decision will be taken through discussion to extend the time frame of metro rail services on various occasions, including Bishwa Ijtema and book fair,” Quader added.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country’s first-ever electricity-powered elevated rail system on the Uttara–Agargaon route on 28 December 2022. On 4 November last year, she launched the services on the Agargaon-Motijheel section.
