A Chattogram court today (Mar 10) sentenced two people to death for killing a 70-year-old woman in the district.
The death row convicts are – Md. Rubel, 28, and Md. Abbas, 34.
Sixth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Begum Sirajam Munira passed the order in presence of Abbas.
Barua Dighu, Additional Public Prosecutor of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court confirmed the matter.
He said the court passed its verdict after hearing 10 witnesses.
The court also sentenced the convicts to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 20,000 for stealing gold ornaments before murdering, he said.
However, accused Rubel is absconding after getting bail, he said, adding the court acquitted another named Farhad Hossain Zakir as the charges were not proved.
According to case statement, Manju Sen, a 70-year-old woman, went missing after she went out for a walk as usual on the morning of 25 May 2018 in the Naval-to Ghat area of Sadarghat police station in the city.
Later, deceased son Ratan Kanti filed a missing diary at Kotwali police station in Sen Nagar.
The next day on May 26 at noon, the police found Manju Sen's body in the bushes next to an abandoned building in the Naval-2 area of Sadarghat police station.
In this incident, the police arrested Rubel and Abbas. After the investigation of the case, the police filed the charge sheet in the court on October 10, 2018.
During interrogation, Rubel and Abbas confessed that they had strangled Manju Sen to take her gold earrings, ring and mobile phone. Rubel was the janitor of that building.
