At least eight compartments of Jamalpur-bound ‘Bijoy Express’ train derailed in Cumilla on Sunday (March 17).
The incident happened near Hasanpur Railway Station at Nangalkot upazila of the district.
Liaquat Ali Mazumder, Senior Assistant Engineer (Roads) of Railway Cumilla confirmed the matter.
He said eight coaches Jamalpur-bound ‘Bijoy Express’ train from Chattogram derailed near Tejer Bazar area of Dhalua union of the upazila at around 1.45pm after the rail tracks bent due to hot weather, halting train movement on Dhaka-Chattogram route.
Several people were injured during the incident.
Three relief trains from Pahartoli, Laksham and Akhaura left for the spot to salvage the derailed bogies.
Following the derailment, train service from Chattogram to Dhaka, Sylhet, Jamalpur remained suspended while Chattogram-bound trains are plying through another rail track, police and railway officials said.
