Tk100cr allocation proposed for fighting climate crisis

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has proposed a special allocation of Tk 100 crore for climate change and environmental protection in the national budget for the fiscal year 2024-25.

He said: "Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Considering the severity and breadth of these impacts, we are taking all necessary steps to enhance our capacity for climate adaptation and mitigation. To expedite these efforts, I am proposing a special allocation of Tk 100 crore in this year's budget."

The minister made the announcement while placing the proposed national budget for 2025FY in parliament today.

The proposed fund will support the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP), initially formulated in 2009 and currently being updated.

The BCCSAP has played a crucial role in guiding the nation's climate initiatives, with a total of Tk 3969 crore allocated from FY10 to FY24 for the Climate Change Trust Fund (CCTF).

This fund has supported 969 projects, of which 721 have been completed.

"We are currently evaluating the climate-related allocations and actual expenditures in the budgets of 25 climate-related ministries or divisions," said the minister.

Additionally, the recent establishment of the Bangladesh Climate and Development Platform (BCDP) aims to enhance coordination among various projects addressing climate change impacts, he added.
