Dhaka traffic disrupted as students block Science Lab intersection

Dhaka traffic face disruptions as students of Dhaka College have blocked the Science Laboratory intersection in New Market area to protest the reinstatement of the quota system in government jobs.

On Sunday around 1:40 pm, students marched from Nilkhet and halted at the Science Laboratory intersection. The protest, led by Dhaka College students, was organised under the banner of the 'Anti-discrimination Student Movement'.

Participants in the movement expressed their determination to continue protesting until the quota system in government jobs is abolished.

They called for an end to the special privileges granted to specific groups in government employment, warning that the nationwide movement would escalate in intensity.

Najmul Hasan, a student at Dhaka College, stated, "This is part of our pre-announced programmes. Previously, we staged a four-day protest at the college's main gate, demanding the abolition of quotas."

He further said, "Our demand remains firm: quotas must be abolished. While the Constitution advocates equality, quotas perpetuate discrimination."

Earlier on Saturday, students announced a boycott of classes and exams across all universities on Sunday in protest against the High Court's decision to reinstate the 56% quota, including a 30% quota for freedom fighters, in first and second class government jobs, and to demand the reinstatement of the 2018 circular.

In addition, students also announced the 'Bangla Blockade' programme at various key locations throughout the country.
