Govt ready to hold talks with students over quota reform

Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque today (July 18) said the government is ready to discuss the quota reform issue with the agitated students.

He was briefing journalists in the tunnel of the National Parliament.

The minister also said if the students want, the government is ready to sit today.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assigned Law Minister and Education Minister to address the matter," he said.

He claimed that as the quota reformists said they were ready to hold talks with the government, the prime minister agreed to talks.

The minister also said the prime minister asked the law minister to take initiative to hold early hearing of the quota-related case pending with the Supreme Court.

Anisul Haque said he has already instructed the attorney general to take initiative in this regard and the AG will file an appeal with the Supreme Court on Sunday seeking early hearing of the case.

The government has decided to form a judicial probe committee led by High Court Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman to investigate the incident.

The committee will be formed upon receiving approval from the chief justice.

The minister requested the protesters to either end or suspend their protest as the government is ready to hold talk with them.
