Troublemakers in CHT won't be spared: Home adviser

A high-level committee will be formed to investigate the violence sparked in the Chattogram Hill Tracts as no culprits will be allowed to go spare, Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said on Saturday.

“The law and order cannot be allowed to deteriorate in the hill areas. The people involved in the violence will be brought to book for punishment as no one will be spared,” he said while talking to reporters in Rangamati.

Earlier in the day, he held a meeting with several local political leaders, representatives from various ethnic groups, and members of law enforcement agencies at the Rangamati Cantonment.

“Those who will try to worsen the situation in the hill areas will be given a befitting reply,” he warned.

A total of four people have died in violent clashes between indigenous and Bengali communities that began in Dighinala Upazila of Khagrachhari district and spread to Rangamati from Thursday night into Friday.

Around 70 people from both sides were injured and shops and homes were vandalised and set on fire during the clashes.

To control the situation, the district administration imposed Section 144 in Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts on Friday.
